How to deliver tracks for mastering

Follow these tips to optimize your final mixes for mastering. Some tips focus on audio, while others cover release information.

  • Format: Export your track as WAV or AIFF (or FLAC). Don’t send mp3.

  • Sample rate: Whatever you recorded at (48kHz, 44.1kHz, 96kHz all fine)

  • Bit depth: 24bit (or 32bit).

  • Do not dither or normalise your track when exporting.

  • Headroom: Make sure the master buss isn’t going too near 0dB, ideally -3dB ish is a good place to stay below. If the track is hitting 0dB, just turn the master channel down. More info on this here.

  • Silence: Allow some silence before the first sound, and ensure reverb/delay tails or ambient noise aren’t cut off abruptly at the end.

  • Master Processing: Keep EQ, compression, and saturation, but turn off limiters or maximizers (unless you love their specific sound).

Information to provide

Essential:

  • Track titles and release title: Ensure correct spelling, punctuation, and capitalization.

  • Artist name: Pay attention to proper punctuation and capitalization.

  • Track sequence: List the correct order for EPs or albums.

  • Release format: Specify whether it’s for streaming, vinyl, or CD.

Optional:

  • ISRC codes: Provide them if available.

  • Track spacing/fade-outs: Communicate your preferences or provide a demo.

  • Special requests: If you want specific treatment (e.g., dynamic, aggressive limiting, enhanced vocals), mention it.

Feel free to ask questions if you're unsure about anything.
